Veiled Souls is a 160 page memoir by Katrin Kassiri and Reza Safarnejad. The story is based on the true life story of the co-author of the book, Katrin Kassiri, written in first person. Her story is a romantic adventure that begins in Iran in 1976 and ends in the present day United States. It is an honest and personal account of a Bahai woman’s life, catapulted from a peaceful childhood in pre-revolution Iran into the uncertain and dangerous post-revolution Iran, who comes to live in the United States as a young adult. This is also a true story about a woman who tries to live life on her own terms under the rule of a fundamentalist religious government and prejudices of her family.

Katrin’s story begins with the tragic death of her sister who committed suicide at the age of seventeen while engaged to her Moslem fiancé, because family members on both sides were opposed to the inter-faith marriage. Katrin’s story through Iran’s revolution includes some of Reza’s experiences whose family actively participated in the revolution, interpolated into Katrin’s story. Her story continues through post-revolution Iran where Bahais were openly discriminated against with accounts of how the changes in Iran affected her family and love life. The story includes candid insights into how people of Iran felt about the United States during these years. The story takes a dangerous turn when Katrin and her sister flee Iran with the aid of drug traffickers on camel backs through the desert into Pakistan where they lived for two years before coming to the United States.

Her story in the United States is a personal account with a fresh view of an Iranian Bahai who is new to the western culture as she struggles to find her place in life. There are more twists and turns when she falls in love with a Moslem man who is younger than her and his mother will not give her blessing to their marriage.
